General Residential Smoke Alarm Requirements: In most localities, smoke alarms are required on each level and in every bedroom. For new home construction, hardwired interconnected smoke alarms are usually required.

The vast majority of local jurisdictions have adopted the International Code set, which requires residential occupancies to be equipped with smoke detectors. This aligns with the Model code requirements from NFPA 72 and 720 for residential applications. States generally adopt these requirements as they update their legislation. NOTE: Specific requirements for Smoke Alarm installation vary from state to state and from region to region. Check with your local Fire Department for current requirements in your area.
